![]() The TV shows, films, and music associated with synthwave didn't really exist in the '80s. As well as a lot more attention being paid to PS1 era games - which is already happening with many indie games right now.įirstly, I don't think that the synthwave movement is that nostalgia-based. I wouldn't be surprised to see a slight revival of 00s style gross-out comedies and a film or two about a daredevil group like Jackass. Even Spiderman was launched with a track from Nickelback. ![]() ![]() With things like the Matrix/Fight Club/Donnie Darko/Blade/Boondock Saints and Linkin Park/Marilyn Manson/Evanescence all over the place. It will be interesting to see how it goes down though because it was actually quite an angsty period of time in terms of pop-culture in some respects. Unless it's like the scene where the dorky 70s kid wore flares to school. Somehow I'll doubt we'll see too many characters with baggy 3/4 jeans covered in chains. Well, if they're anything like the nostalgia movies we have now about previous generations - they'll make outfits which have a 90s/00s vibe but a contemporary fit and normal people will listen to music that only like 3% of the population would have heard of. My childhood was mostly in the 90s and even after democracy and capitalism hit us over here, popculture trends were still pretty late to arrive to my country. It's all very nice, but I'm not really connecting with it that much because I was born 1989 behind the Iron Curtain. The stylistic choices of movies like The Guest and It Follows are fun to watch, the 80s synth music scores and pop song-filled soundtracks like Atomic Blonde are fun to listen to, and things like It and Stranger Things bring back an era that many of my favorite movies came out in. On a personal note: The 80s nostalgia wave that's still washing over Hollywood is nice and all, but I have a hard time connecting with it. What's some other late 90s/early 00s nostalgia fuel that you think will make it into the future wave of nostalgia movies? ![]() I can't wait for movies that unironically use Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys songs, kids that play with Tamagochis and Pokemon trading cards, and subplots that involve a character switching his movie collection from vhs to dvd. ![]()
